St Lucia is so proud of Levern Spencer. So am I! The island has waited for 56 years for a gold meal at the Commonwealth Games – Spencer was victorious in the women’s high jump at Gold Coast 2018.

The 33-year-old reigned supreme with a best attempt of 1.95 metres as Lake settled for silver on 1.93m. The bronze medal went to Australia’s Nicola McDermott, who registered 1.91m.

The 33 year old was met by her family, government dignitaries and sporting officials as she arrived at the Hewanorra International Airport.

Among those in attendance were Acting Prime Minister Stephenson King, Minister of Sports Lennard Montoute and Minister for Local Government and Culture Fortuna Belrose who is also the President of the St Lucia Olympic Committee.

At a celebration in the Sir Derek Walcott Square, Spencer dedicated her victory to St Lucia and said that all she had wanted was, “to place St Lucia on top of the world and to show that, despite our size, we can soar to great heights.”
