The Channel Tunnel is one of the biggest engineering projects ever undertaken in the UK. Taking more than five years to complete, with more than 13,000 workers from England and France collaborating to realise the vision. Tunnelling began in 1988, and the 31.4 mile (50.5-kilometre) tunnel was officially opened by the Queen and the French President Francois Mitterrand at a ceremony in Calais on May 6, 1994.
