Launching Saint Lucia’s Nobel Laureate Festival is always a joy for me as I’m surrounded by people who love education and creativity. It also gives me an opportunity to meet new media personnel, colleagues and friends from the UK who come to Saint Lucia during this time.
Through its many events, I feel proud to have known Sir Derek Walcott personally; through being the Festival’s co-ordinator, he embraced me not only for the role, but for who I am. He always used to ask me, “Why haven’t you acted yet? Come to one of my rehearsals!”
His partner, Sigrid Nama and me took our selfie after a ‘knowing’ smile, remembering Sir Derek attending the launches when he was in this world.
We missed Sir Derek and his wit but believe he is smiling knowing we are all together and celebrating excellence.
