Sunday’s was Country Music Day at my house. Charlie Pride always featured largely in the huge collection of country my dad spinned.

I know many of his songs by heart and I remember singing them with my American twang. “Just Between You and Me,” and, “Kiss and Angel Good Mornin,’” which became his biggest hit, reaching No. 1 on the country charts and crossing over to No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Charlie Pride was the first Black Country superstar. He passed away Saturday (Dec. 12) in Dallas of complications from COVID-19. He was 86.

There was no way I would leave Nashville without going to the Country Music Hall of Fame and visiting so many Country artists. It was a day I’ll always remember. I called my dad to tell him I wish he had been with me. Its a journey I’d love to plan.

Charlie Pride, thank you for the memories you’ve given the world and me… For the times I spent snuggling under a blanket on the living room sofa enjoying your music with my dad.

     Rest in eternal peace.
