Relaxing at Houston International Airport…That’s the way to do it! Reclined after a hearty breakfast and taking in a great selection of airport shopping and exhibitions.
The current exhibition, Higher Ground – 2015 – Video – is an interdisciplinary work consisting of video, sculpture and photography. In the spirit of George Méliê s’ landmark 1902 silent film, A Trip of the Moon, the artist team Hillerband+Magsamen and their children, embark on an adventure to construct and fly a rocket ship to the moon by taking apart their suburban home in Houston, Texas.
Using doors, duck tape, dollhouses, toys, and storage boxes, the family of four instructs a fantastical and monumental event in their own backyard.
This cinematic odyssey references both the creativity and futility of the American experience, as well as Houston’s history with NASA and frontier exploration. From backyard wrestling to big-box-store escapism, a Beckettian theme emerges in the work, echoing the phrase, “can’t go on…must go on.”
